Sarah BERNHARDT (1844–1923). 4 autograph letters signed to her solicitor, Maître Breuillaud, 333 Rue Saint-Martin, undated, 1876, 1882 and 1925. 4 letters, 8 pages each, in-16 format, on Oriental Turkey Mill Kent laid paper, and 2 envelopes, including a mourning envelope bearing her monogram and motto ‘Quand même’, in black ink or graphite. Concerning the settlement of her debts to Madame Moreau; a loan granted to her by her uncle, Monsieur Richard; the drafting of her will; and a meeting with Monsieur Nicolas-Félix Escalier, her architect and painter friend. ENCLOSED: - A certified copy or extract of Sarah Bernhardt’s will dated 24 June 1910, registered at the Civil Court of the Seine on 29 March 1923. She bequeaths everything to her son Maurice Bernhardt, ‘instructing him to distribute mementoes to my friends as he sees fit ’. ‘I give him everything, absolutely everything’. - A typewritten letter in a pneumatic tube, signed by Maurice Bernhardt, son of Sarah Bernhardt, to his solicitor, Maître Breuillaud. Paris, 30 March 1925. 1 p. in-8, on letterhead bearing the name of the Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt (Place du Châtelet), expressing her displeasure at the delay surrounding the sale of Belle-Isle. - Supplementary agreement to the lease of the Théâtre des Nations between the City of Paris and Madame Sarah Bernhardt. Copy from Maître Mahot de la Quérantonnais to Madame Sarah Bernhardt dated 30 March and 16 July 1900. 14 pp., front and back, in-4, stapled. Includes 1 autograph handwritten letter and a statement of disbursements and fees due from the notary’s office addressed to Maître Breuillaud. - 3 lithographed architectural plans of the set stores at the Sarah-Bernhardt Theatre, comprising: 1/ Façade on Boulevard Bolivar, 2/ General plan and 3/ Cross-section. (creased, torn, with gaps and tears). A few annotations and two signed by various parties involved. - File comprising a copy of the judgement of the Commercial Court of the Seine department and various documents concerning Madame Sarah Bernhardt’s debts to Monsieur Bouchart in 1879. 15 pp. (front and back) in-4, stapled, and 13 pp. (front and back or front only) in-8, stapled. - 5 invoices addressed to Sarah Bernhardt from the establishments of Madame Fardel, Adolphe Bergue, Jules Lousseur, Hellstern & Sons, and Guignard & Cie for the purchase of a velvet coat, black satin shoes, and even cartridges, the cleaning of various wrought-iron art objects, and horse-drawn carriage journeys; 8 payment orders for goods from the Paquin haute couture house; and the repayment of a notarised promissory note from Madame Bernhardt in favour of Mr Vaniere
