Description
[Curiosa]. [GERVAISE de LATOUCHE (Jean-Charles)]. The Story of Gouberdom, Porter of the Carthusians. No place, no publisher, 1772. Two parts in 1 vol. in-8, frontispiece, IV folios, 326 pp., contemporary marbled havana calf, plain spine, title and small gilt metal fittings, gilt edges, gilt interior roulette (slight rubbing; restoration and reinforcement of the frontispiece on pp. 8, 53–56, 67–68, 109–110, and on all plates; a few small tears in the margins not affecting the text).
This edition has been revised, corrected and expanded under the supervision of the Holy Father, a fact illustrated by the title vignette depicting the Pope.
20 loose copper-engraved plates, including the frontispiece, all of which have been restored, mostly in the margins (reinterpretation of one-sixth of plate 6).
Our 1772 copy differs from those listed: the text is in fact preceded by the verse narrative entitled ‘On baise la mule du Pape, L’origine de cette cérémonie’ (‘The Pope’s Mule Is Kissed: The Origin of This Ceremony’), yet ‘Le Chapitre général des Cordeliers’ (a tale attributed to Alexis Piron) is missing; it is paginated continuously as 326 pp., including the word ‘end’, and not 333 pp.
A famous 18th-century French erotic novel. The work was first published around 1741 under the title *Histoire de Dom B*** (Bougre)*, and subsequently under various titles.
