Pablo MAÑE (1880–1971) *The Dance*, 1941. Patinated plaster bas-relief, signed, dated and inscribed ‘Schadrac, Meschac, Abed-Nego’ and ‘To Maestro Eugenio d’Ors, his friend’. (Missing sections on one side and minor knocks). 42 x 43 cm A bronze version of this composition is known to exist. A biblical scene taken from the Book of Daniel, in which Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego, Hebrew dignitaries from the province of Babylon, were thrown into the fiery furnace for refusing to bow down before the golden idol erected by King Nebuchadnezzar II. According to the biblical account related by the prophet Daniel, an angel appeared and came to the aid of the three unfortunate men, who emerged unscathed from the fire into which the king had cast them.
