Description
A chiselled bronze case gilded with mercury, decorated with musical satyrs, flowers and foliage. The enamelled dial and movement are signed ‘Ragot à Paris’, a clockmaker listed in the *Tardy*, a dictionary of clockmakers, 18th century. The signature ‘Ragot à Paris’ refers to Claude Ragot, one of the most important Parisian clockmakers of the second half of the 18th century. Following the registration of his master’s certificate on 10 September 1785, he set up his workshop on Rue Saint-Denis and immediately gained a strong reputation amongst Paris’s leading connoisseurs of luxury timepieces. Consequently, from this period onwards, some of his clocks are recorded in the collections of several prominent collectors, notably one item listed in the inventory following the death of Anne-Gabriel-Henri Bernard, Marquis de Boullainvilliers, as well as a second piece noted in the official record of the seals affixed after the death of Louis-Philippe d’Orléans, Duke of Orléans; finally, it is particularly worth noting that a Ragot clock was recorded during the turmoil of the Revolution as part of the clock collection at the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne at the Palace of Versailles, it had then been in use for several years in the apartments of the Duchess of Polignac, governess to the Children of France and friend and confidante of Queen Marie-Antoinette. The white enamelled dial, circular in shape, is signed in red ‘Ragot / A Paris’. It features Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes, with two finely crafted hands. The upper section is crowned with a lyre motif, surrounded by a hanging laurel garland and roses in relief, classical symbols of love and art. On either side of the dial, two finely sculpted figures of child satyrs playing musical instruments bring the composition to life. Dimensions: 33 x 30 cm*
