SERGE ROVINSKY (1895–1945)
PAIR OF STOOLS, CIRCA 1932
In dark brown lacquered wood, with a rectangular seat upholstered in black leather; the solid, semi-circular leg rests on a square-section base with bevelled edges
Height: 42 cm (16½ in.); Width: 51.5 cm (20¼ in.); Depth: 36 cm (14 1/8 in.)
Made of dark brown lacquered wood, with a rectangular seat upholstered in brown leather, resting on a ‘U’-shaped base with a square cross-section and sloping sides.
The painter, interior designer and architect Serge Rovinsky collaborated regularly with Jean Dunand. One of his most significant commissions was carried out for Nadine Oxnard, an American painter living in Paris, who notably acquired the black lacquered sideboard by Jean Dunand and Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann exhibited at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. He designed a series of pieces of furniture for her, lacquered by Jean Dunand and the Charpentier workshop. A view of this flat shows two stools of the same model as those presented here, probably these very same examples.*
