RTO Emil Muller (Switzerland, 1863–1929). “The Death Penalty. Mr Georges Berry, Mr Cassetillard (sic), Mr Briand. 15 July 1908”. 3 oil paintings on canvas forming a triptych. Signed at the bottom. Unframed. Approx. 205 x 92 cm for one (Damage and losses. Restorations, including one re-stretched canvas. Sold as is) --- MUST BE COLLECTED WITHIN 15 CALENDAR DAYS. After this period, charges will apply Note: The figures depicted in these three paintings are the French politicians: Georges Berry (1855–1915), Aristide Briand (1862–1932) and Henri Castillard (1847–1927) In 1906, the Budget Committee of the Chamber of Deputies voted to withdraw funding for the guillotine with the aim of halting executions. On 3 July 1908, the Minister of Justice, Aristide Briand, presented a bill to the Chamber of Deputies on the abolition of the death penalty; however, despite the support of Jean Jaurès, the bill was rejected on 8 December by 330 votes to 201. The date of the paintings above is 15 July 2008, which is after the bill was tabled and before it was rejected.
