Description
Pieter II NEEFS (1620–1675), attributed to, Interior of St Mary’s Cathedral, Antwerp, oil on panel, restored, dimensions: 27 × 36 cm + frame: 45 × 54 cm. Provenance: estate, Basel. True to the pictorial tradition of the Antwerp School, this work is characteristic of the output of Pieter Neefs the Younger, who masterfully continued his father’s speciality of portraying sacred architecture. Here, the artist immerses us in the heart of the masterpiece of Brabant Gothic architecture: Antwerp’s Cathedral of Our Lady. Through a rigorous linear perspective, accentuated by the two-tone chequered paving and the monumental receding lines of the high naves, Neefs masterfully controls the play of light and shadow that sculpts the ecclesiastical space. Beyond the technical feat of spatial illusion, the panel comes alive as a precious record of daily and spiritual life in 17th-century Flanders. The comings and goings of figures in their Sunday best, the clergy deep in discussion in the foreground, the faithful gathered in prayer near the Baroque altars, and even the silhouettes of beggars remind us that the cathedral was then a place of intense social interaction as much as of devotion. The delicate narrative vignettes, often entrusted to collaborating painters, contrast with their vivid colours against the subtle, monochrome palette of the building’s grey and brown stones, lending this cabinet piece an atmosphere that is both solemn and deeply alive.
