Description
Georges WASHINGTON (1827–1910), a horseman draped in a burnous, carrying a moukhala rifle. In the background, on the left: a second figure on a dromedary; on the right: oriental architecture topped by a kubba, surrounded by a sandy desert. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, dimensions: 36x28 cm + frame: 56.5x48 cm, good condition, signature slightly faded. French painter and Orientalist, originally from Marseille, graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He became a leading figure in Orientalist painting, specialising in scenes of caravans, skirmishes and Bedouin horsemen resting, from the 1850s onwards whilst travelling in Algeria, from Kabylie to the Sahara, and then to Morocco . Works exhibited in at least seven French museums.
