Description
Louis NIEDERBERGER (1821–1895), The Infant Jesus Carrying the Instruments of the Passion. The composition is highly symbolic. The child carries a large wooden cross on his right shoulder and holds the nails of the Crucifixion in his left hand. It is a classic depiction intended to show that Christ’s destiny was accepted from a very young age. The face, surrounded by a soft light, is rendered with great tenderness, the eyes raised towards the sky in an attitude of devotion and serene acceptance. The handwritten inscription on the back indicates that this painting was donated to the "Rettungsanstalt Hermetschwil" in 1883 (a shelter or relief centre located in the former monastery of Hermetschwil in Switzerland). Oil on canvas, signed lower right; dimensions: 53x30cm + gilded twisted-frame: 59x36cm; weight: 1.6kg; in good overall condition. Swiss painter originally from Kerns. An academic painter trained in Salzburg and Munich, he specialised in sacred art and decorated numerous churches and chapels in Central Switzerland (Sarnen, Stalden). His work, influenced by his travels in Europe, follows the tradition of 19th-century Romantic and devotional religious painting.
