Description
Large CHINESE rug from the Republican era, circa 1910–1925, dimensions: 252 x 334 cm, hand-knotted, 100% wool pile on a cotton weft, origin: Northern China (Ningxia / Beijing workshops).
A magnificent example from the Chinese transitional period, often described as the nascent ‘Beijing’ or ‘Chinese Art Deco’ style for the international market. It features a rich traditional iconography: the central field, in a raspberry-red/coral colour, is dotted with stylised floral medallions (peonies and lotuses), flowering prunus branches, as well as birds and butterflies in flight (symbols of joy and longevity). The carpet is framed by several borders, including a geometric frieze in a Greek key pattern (the sacred Wan motif) and a main border on an imperial gold-yellow background adorned with blue scrolls. These features and this vibrant colour palette are typical of the exceptional works produced in northern China in the early 20th century. In good overall condition. Fresh, bright colours, sound pile and stable original selvedges. Fully cleaned.
