Description
RUSSIA - Icon, second half of the 19th century, The Ascension of the Lord with the Virgin of Kazan, depicted in two panels: 1. Below: the Ascension of Christ. In the centre, Christ ascends to heaven in a mandorla of light, dressed in a pink chiton and a blue himation. Below, the Virgin Mary and the apostles are gathered on the Mount of Olives, expressing amazement and adoration. 2. At the top: Our Lady of Kazan, with a small depiction of the icon of the Mother of God of Kazan, one of the most venerated images in Russia. Oil and gilding on wood, dimensions: 30.5 x 25 cm, inscriptions in Church Slavonic, in good condition, with some signs of wear. It bears witness to the popular piety of the time, combining a major liturgical feast, the Ascension, with the Marian protection of Kazan. Also included is a 20th-century copy on wood of the Yaroslavl icon: The Apparition to the Holy Women.
