Description
Sword of the King’s Bodyguard, 1st model 1814. Handle covered in stingray skin, with a watermark. Chiselled brass mountings. Long-tailed pommel. Guard comprising one main branch, three secondary branches and a shell bearing the Arms of France surrounded by foliage. Quillon cut into a fleur-de-lis shape, hallmarked and stamped ‘Versailles’ and engraved ‘E.4’. Curved blade, with a flat back marked ‘Manufre Rle du Klingenthal, September 1814’, hollow edges and a fuller, marked on one side ‘Garde du Corps Du Roi’, framed by a fleur-de-lis and military insignia, hallmarked at the heel, and on the other side with a radiant sun, a shield bearing three fleurs-de-lis beneath a crown, surrounded by foliage and military insignia. Leather scabbard, with three cut-out brass fittings, decorated with linework. Iron tip. (restorations, damage to the shagreen, oxidation)
