Description
Sword of Major-General Charles Auguste Farny, 1817 model with chiselled decoration. Horn hilt, with filigree. Chiselled, gilded brass mountings. Truncated conical pommel decorated with barrels and inscribed ‘CF’ within a shield. Single-branch crossguard, decorated with barrels. Guard featuring a wreath of foliage, set against a bundle of flags, with three silver stars, applied. Counter-guard in the shape of a pump. Double-edged blade, engraved halfway along the obverse with ‘Les Officiers du 26me Dragons à leur Colonel’ framed by foliage, and on the reverse with military insignia framed by foliage. Leather scabbard, with two brass fittings, cut, chiselled and gilded. ABE (restorations, damage to the leather)
Farny Charles Auguste (1838–1924) École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr 1857–1859, ‘Indoustan’ class. Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1864, Officer in 1888, Commander in 1897 and Grand Officer in 1902. Promoted to Major-General in 1898; in 1902, he commanded the 5th Army Corps in Orléans.
