Description
19th-century four-lobed Latin processional cross, made of gilded metal, engraved, embossed and assembled with small nails, inspired by medieval designs; dimensions: 52 × 40 cm; weight: 1.2 kg; with fixing holes at the bottom and at the back, for mounting on a wall or at the top of a pole; in good overall condition. The body of the cross is engraved with foliage and stylised flowers winding around a guilloché background. At each end, a projecting diamond-shaped medallion features a figure engraved in bas-relief. These depict the four Evangelists in their symbolic forms, drawn from the visions of the prophet Ezekiel and the Book of Revelation: the eagle, the angel, the ox and the lion. This cross was used in the Catholic liturgy to lead the procession at the beginning and end of Mass, or during outdoor processions in parishes.
