Description
FRANCE, 17th century – Saint Agnes, a carved and polychromed oak sculpture, with a roughly shaped back. Standing, the saint wears a dress made of four layers of fabric. Her hair, gathered into a bun at the back, frames her face and falls over her shoulders at the front. Height: 75 cm – Width: 24 cm – Depth: 14 cm. The palm of martyrdom in her left hand and a finger on her right hand are missing. Signs of wear. The two large holes beneath the plinth and on the head indicate that the sculpture was part of a larger structure, probably a large wooden altar. Saint Agnes is the patron saint of chastity, married couples, virgins, bodily purity, young girls and harvests.
