Charles François DAUBIGNY (1817–1878), The Banks of the Oise, oil on oak panel, signed lower right and on the reverse, titled on the reverse, painted circa 1860–1865, restored, dimensions: 33 × 46 cm + frame: 54.5 × 66 cm. Provenance: private collection in Fischbach-Göslikon.
French painter, regarded as one of the pivotal artists linking the Barbizon School and Impressionism, exhibited in some sixty international museums. True to his favourite themes, the artist captures here the banks of the Oise, which he explored tirelessly aboard his studio boat, *Le Bottin*. The composition strikes a perfect balance between the density of the dark groves and the shimmering flow of the river, in which a late-afternoon sky with pearlescent hues is reflected. The discreet presence of the washerwoman on the bank reinforces the sense of bucolic tranquillity characteristic of these 19th-century rural scenes. Here, Daubigny moves away from academic style in favour of a swift, vibrant brushstroke, capable of capturing the fleeting moment and the quivering atmosphere.
