Description
Jean-Baptiste VAN LOO (1684–1745), after a work by the 18th-century French School, Portrait of Marie Leszczyńska, Queen of France and wife of Louis XV, after the portrait on display at the Château de Bussy-Rabutin. Oil on canvas, re-stretched, restored. Dimensions: 59.5 × 46.5 cm + frame: 72.5 × 54 cm. Provenance: private collection, Rothrist. She is depicted in a three-quarter profile, her gaze turned towards the viewer, wearing an elaborate powdered hairstyle, delicately adorned with fresh flowers matching the motifs on her dress. Her court dress in green and silver brocade, richly adorned with floral garlands on the front of the bodice, reflects the fashion of the 1720s.
A Polish princess born in 1703, daughter of Stanislas Leszczynski, Marie Leszczynska spent her youth in exile before her unexpected marriage to Louis XV in 1725. Having become Queen of France, she fulfilled her dynastic duty by giving birth to ten children. Neglected by the king in favour of a succession of favourites such as the Marquise de Pompadour, she gradually withdrew from active political life. She then devoted herself to devotion, charitable works and the arts, patronising musicians and practising painting herself. Deeply loved by the people for her piety and great generosity, she died at Versailles in 1768, leaving behind the image of a dignified and respected queen.
