René Louis CHRÉTIEN (1867–1945), attributed to, Still Life with Oysters and Mussels, Copper Jug and Bottles, oil on canvas, dimensions: 81 x 126 cm + later period frame: 92 x 139 cm, in good overall condition. French painter of still lifes, landscapes and genre scenes. École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, pupil of Léon Bonnat, exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1887 onwards, teacher of the painter Pedro Alexandrino Borges. Works now on display in some twenty national and international museums.
This significant oil on canvas is an interesting example of the large kitchen still lifes for which René Louis Chrétien became renowned at the Salon des Artistes Français from the late 19th century onwards. The artist demonstrates his virtuosity in rendering diverse textures: the lustrous mother-of-pearl of the fresh oysters, the metallic sheen of the large brass jug, and the dusty translucence of the bottle glass. The technique employed – characterised by broad swathes of paint, vibrant contours and a free, fluid brushstroke (particularly in the rendering of the bottles and the background) – confirms the attribution to this artist.
