Pascal BOURGOIN (1953–2021), ‘Liberté’, acrylic on canvas, H. 81 cm; W. 65 cm. Pascal Bourgoin-Dessene, nephew of Fernand Léger, through his first marriage to his aunt Jeanne Lohy (married on 2 December 1919). Pascal Bourgoin-Dessene grew up with works by Fernand Léger hanging on the walls of the family home in Les Andelys (Eure). As a result, he ‘unwittingly’ absorbed the ‘essence’ of the painter. He travelled with his family to Biot for the museum’s opening in 1960 at the invitation of Nadia Léger (his second wife). He was also present at the opening of the Fernand Léger farm-museum in Lisores. From then on, it was clear that, being so deeply immersed in this artistic world, he could not help but admire the artist and want to try his hand at painting canvases in the Master’s style. Preferring acrylic to oil, he strives to capture the expression that Fernand Léger intended for his compositions. With a love of bright, shimmering colours, he mainly chooses varied motifs featuring a range of colours and diverse shapes. ‘Colour is life’ is his motto. – ‘A painting is not necessarily a work of art; the aim is to catch the eye through contrasts of colour and form. If the mind is receptive at the moment of viewing or afterwards, then that painting will become an indispensable part of everyday life.’
