Description
Polychrome carved wooden statuette with coloured beads, depicting a man wearing a Baoulé loincloth.
Ivory Coast
Height: 48 cm
Expert: Mr Stéphane Mangin
Provenance: Collection of the painter François Bouillon.
François Bouillon taught at the École nationale supérieure d’art in Dijon and subsequently at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris. A self-taught artist, he spent time as a child in the studio of his grandfather, a painter, and later collected African and Oceanic art objects. Through his many travels, he developed an interest in the primitive signs and symbols of a universal culture.
Through the use of various techniques (drawing, painting, manipulated photography, sculpture, installation, etc.) and the use of ‘primitive’ elements (stone, earth, fire, feathers, bone, tree branches, metal, marks) and recurring forms (spirals, dots, cones, crosses, inversions, etc.) he creates works in which the creative process plays a central role.
For François Bouillon, a contemporary artist and collector of primitive art, the modern gesture cannot be separated from a primitive imprint. It is accompanied by a search for origins which, beyond historical and specifically cultural developments, points to the very essence of humanity in its most unadorned form.
