Description
PARIS, 1827–1838
Rectangular gift box in the form of a snuff box, the hinged lid bearing the cipher of Ferdinand-Philippe d’Orléans (1810–1842, eldest son of King Louis-Philippe) surmounted by a royal crown on an amati background. With slightly indented sides, the box is entirely guilloché, with the opening clasp meticulously decorated with floral scrolls.
In its original red morocco case bearing the initials of the Duke of Orléans surmounted by a royal crown, with the inscription on the reverse: ‘BAPST Frères Joailliers de SAR Mgr le duc d’Orléans’.
- Sardanapalus’s head hallmark within a circle for the ‘grosse garantie’ in Paris; this hallmark was in use from 16 August 1819 to 9 May 1838.
- A bull’s head on the left with a floral belt within an irregular hexagonal frame. The number 3 lying on its back, denoting 3rd fineness gold (750/000).
- A mastiff’s head hallmark introduced by the ordinance of 30 June 1835.
- Goldsmith’s mark: L – an insect’s leg – T, within a diamond for Louis François TRONQUOY (engraved 1827 – struck out 1871)
