Description
France, c. 1820.
A very elegant ovoid casket, known as a ‘tombeau’, mounted with finely chiselled and gilded bronze. The body is made of ribbed, soapy ‘soap bubble’ opaline. The top is shaped like a pin cushion, covered in purple velvet. It rests on four clogs. Richly decorated with a molette pattern. It opens from the top and features a keyhole adorned with cornucopias. This piece is attributed to the Le Creusot factory due to the slightly bluish tint of the opaline crystal.
