Jean-François MILLET (Gruchy 1814 – Barbizon 1875) Night-time Bird Hunt Charcoal and pastel highlights on canvas 46 x 47 cm Bears the studio sale stamp in the lower left-hand corner (Lugt no. 1815) Provenance: Sale of the estate of the widow of J. F. Millet, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 24–25 April 1894, (Durand–Ruel), lot 56; Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby’s, 17 November 1993, lot 81, illustrated. This drawing is a study for Jean-François Millet’s painting *The Torchlight Hunt for Birds*, painted in 1874, now in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (see the catalogue of the Millet exhibition, London, Hayward Gallery, 1976, no. 146). The subject was inspired by a childhood memory, as he recounted to the young American painter W. Law. The work also has a premonitory quality, as it was the last painting Millet produced before his death. Another study, also on canvas, is held at the Fine Arts Museum of Boston (see A. Murphy, *Millet – Catalogue Raisonné*, Boston, 1984, reproduced on p. 226). Expert: Cabinet René Millet
