Description
Ceres, or the Allegory of Summer, carved in full relief from ivory. Standing, the goddess rests her foot on a flower-adorned cornucopia to her left and, on her head—crowned with ears of wheat—holds a sickle in her right hand. Late 18th century Height: 20 cm – Gross weight: 489 g On a blackened wooden plinth painted to imitate marble Height: 7.2 cm (cracks) Identified CITES species: Elephantidae spp A CITES certificate No. FR2607510327-K will be issued to the purchaser. This allegorical piece can be compared to the ‘Four Seasons’ series created in the 1770s by the ivory carver Jean-Antoine Belleteste (Dieppe, 1731–1811) (OA. 6196 to 6199). This set draws its inspiration from the marble sculptures in the park at Versailles, created by the great masters of French sculpture. It is therefore hardly surprising that this theme was the subject of numerous variations in the 18th century, particularly in ivory carving. Philippe Malgouyres also notes the existence of several series of the Four Seasons produced in this material during this period, notably in the Dieppe region. The figure of Ceres can also be linked to another work by Belleteste, *Venus and Cupid*, dating from the same period, with which it shares notable stylistic similarities (Walters Art Museum, inv. 71.415).
