Description
Lega Bwami hat
DRC
This ritual mukuba hat, from the Lega ethnic group (DRC), was worn by the high dignitaries of the sacred Bwami society. Its woven plant-fibre headdress is entirely embroidered with mother-of-pearl and plastic buttons from the colonial era, used here to replace the traditional cowrie shells as signs of wealth.
