Description
A large Transition-style cylinder desk in rosewood and amaranth veneer with rich ormolu ornamentation. The cylinder decorated with slats and a lock reveals seven compartments and two drawers, and a sliding top covered in green leather. The shelf is decorated with a frieze of openwork ovals. The belt opens to reveal five drawers. The uprights conceal two leather-wrapped writing shelves and two secrets, each opening onto a boxed drawer. It stands on four curved legs. Stamped four times under the left, right and rear jambs and under a shelf: L. CUEUNIERES JNE EBENISTE. 19th century work, circa 1880 after models by Jean-François Oeben (1721-1763). H. 120 W.135 D. 72 cm. Minor chips and wear. Ceunières was recognised very early on for the exceptional quality of his work, and when he presented two cylinder desks at the 1900 Universal Exhibition, the jury awarded him a silver medal. His extremely fine bronzes prompted François Linke to buy some from the Ceunières workshops in 1902.
