Description
Miniature from a Shahnameh
Ink, pigments and gold on paper
Iran, Shiraz, 1580–1600
Page: 28.9 x 19.9 cm
Miniature: 20 x 16.6 cm
This miniature is taken from a Shahnameh (Book of Kings)
and depicts the episode ‘The arrival of Shangul in the lands
of Iranzamin (Persia)’. Shangul, the King of India, who arrived on the back
of an elephant, is depicted embracing Bahram Gur, the ruler of Iran,
surrounded by their armies. The episode is mentioned on the page (from
the same period) pasted onto the reverse of the miniature, which features a
text written in Nasta’liq script spread across four columns of 25 lines.
(As the Persian text accurately describes the illustrated episode of the meeting
between Shangul and Bahram Gur, it was probably the text
that appeared on the page preceding the miniature, which was subsequently
glued to the back of the corresponding painting).
