Description
Based on the ancient original. The Borghese Gladiator. Terracotta sculpture. H. 50 cm A reduction based on the Borghese Gladiator, an ancient marble sculpture dating from the second quarter of the 2nd century BC and probably carved in Greece. The original, held at the Louvre Museum (Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities; inv. MR 224, N 919, Ma 527), measures 173 × 172 × 139 cm. This smaller version is faithful to the ancient model, although the weapons – shield and sword – are no longer extant. However, it does not reproduce the inscription engraved on the supporting shaft of the original.
