Description
Albertolli (Giocondo) Some decorations for noble halls and other ornaments [Milan], n.p., 1787. Folio, brown half-basane with corners (contemporary binding). First edition, illustrated with 22 plates drawn by Albertolli and engraved by Giacomo Mercoli and Andrea de Bernadis. Interior designs depicting ceilings in the Louis XVI style. The upper cover bears the handwritten title: Plafons de Milan. Volume I. The second of three volumes devoted to ornamentation by Albertolli (1742–1839), professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, published between 1782 and 1796. This second part is expected to contain 23 plates, but the Berlin catalogue lists 22, as does our copy. From the Ricare library, with the following handwritten inscription on the inside front cover: “Ricare. 1790. Brought from Milan”. (Some foxing, binding very worn, a section missing from the spine, one plate with a tear at the bottom). Provenance: PIASA, Drouot, 2 February 2005, lot 8.
