Description
Painted biscuit, mid-19th century
A large scene depicting a Neapolitan shepherd, a bottle in his hand, leaning against a large barrel used as a snuffbox. The decoration is very meticulous; in particular, the shepherd’s costume, his hat covering a scarf, his mandolin, the gourd hanging from his belt and the white handkerchief peeking out of his waistcoat pocket. Note also the delicate rendering of the insects – ladybirds and others – on the barrel. It is worth remembering that at that time Italy was still regarded as an ‘exotic’ country.
Marked ‘A C’ in a cartouche, as on pot 32, perhaps standing for Chauvigné, Alluaud or Ardant.
The upper part of the violin is missing.
H 26.5 cm
