Description
19th-century Bohemian polychrome terracotta
A figure in brown terracotta, identical to the previous one, this time reading the *New York Herald*. This model is a recurring motif in depictions of snuff pots and was reproduced by Joseph Strnact and Johann Maresch in a version nearly thirty cm high, with ‘Montour’ as the newspaper’s title, and notably by Conta and Böhme, who produced it in a wide range of colours and with various newspaper titles (see the previous pot). This one, very finely sculpted and marked ‘William Schiller & Sons’ with the number 98, appears, according to Horowitz, to be the rarest and probably the original.
Marked on the base WS & S and the number 98.
Signs of wear.
H 25.4 cm
