Description
JEANNERET Pierre (1896–1967) (Attributed to) Teak armchair with a rectangular seat of woven cane suspended by chains from the armrests. Slightly sloping backrest made of cotton cord. Flat, contoured legs connected by two tubular crossbars. Circa 1955 (Scuffs, wear, paint stains and missing paint). H: 76.5 cm x W: 49 cm x D: 64 cm Chandigarh is a new city built after India’s independence in 1947. Renowned for its urban planning, the masterplan was drawn up by Le Corbusier based on an earlier plan by Albert Mayer. The city is divided into sectors, numbered from 1 to 60 (Le Corbusier omitted number 13), forming a rectangle measuring 800 × 1,200 m. Most of the city’s buildings were designed by Pierre Jeanneret, as was a whole range of furniture, of which our armchair is a rather rare example. Provenance: Studio armchair belonging to the painter Jean-Claude Salomon (1928–2022), acquired around 1982. Bibliography: Eric Touchaleaume, Gerald Moreau, “Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, The Indian Adventure, Design – Art – Architecture”, Editions Eric Touchaleaume/Galerie 54, 2010, page 557.
