Description
SAVIGNY Berthe (1882–1958) - HB QUIMPER
“First Steps”
A group of figures in glazed stoneware in beige, brown, white and grey-blue, signed in relief on the back of the terrace and beneath the base, with the marks “HB/ Quimper/ +”.
Circa 1925–1930 (slight chip beneath the base and minor firing imperfections).
H: 16.5 cm x W: 18 cm x D: 22.5 cm
The sister of the painter Pierre de Belay, Berthe Savigny was, like him, a self-taught artist. Both a painter and a sculptor, she came into contact with the Grande Maison earthenware factory before 1926. Eighteen pieces emerged from this collaboration, mainly in earthenware—either polychrome or white—but also in stoneware. The Susse foundry in Paris also produced some of her works in terracotta. A true ode to childhood, Berthe Savigny’s modelling work is always imbued with freshness, tenderness and great sensitivity.
Provenance: New item from the stock of the Breton souvenir shop “Mlle TREVIDY”, 38 Rue Saint Guillaume in SAINT BRIEUC, which was taken over around 1920–1930 and remained in business until 1964. Passed down through the family.
Bibliography: Philippe Théallet & Bernard-Jules Verlingue, *Encyclopédie des Céramiques de Quimper*, Editions de la Reinette, Volume V, page 356 for the illustration of our piece.
