Description
Chirvan carpet (warp, weft and pile in wool), North-East Caucasus, circa 1940–1980
190 x 103 cm
The carpet is adorned with a polychrome geometric floral design on a navy blue ground. An ivory border featuring geometric floral motifs is framed by two counter-borders.
‘The term “Chirvan” refers both to a type of carpet and to a region where a great many carpets are produced. It is, in fact, a vast, mountainous region inhabited by a diverse population. It stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, forming a natural barrier between Europe and Asia.
Shirvan carpets are knotted in towns (Kuba, Dagestan, etc.) as well as in villages (Tchi tchi, Lesghi, Seikour, Pérépédil, etc.)
