This plaster cast is a smaller version of the marble sculpture created in 1782 by Claude Michel, known as Clodion (now lost), for the bathroom of the Hôtel de Besenval, the residence of Pierre-Victor de Besenval de Brünstatt, who was originally from Switzerland. This model, depicting a reclining bacchante, was highly successful, and reproductions were circulating in France as early as 1788.
