Description
MORERI (L.). THE GREAT HISTORICAL DICTIONARY. Paris, Mariette [Coignard for vol. 3], 1707. Four folio volumes in marbled fawn calfskin, with an ornate ribbed spine, title and volume number labels in garnet morocco, and edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). Signs of wear to the bindings: missing caps, incipient cracks at the joints but strong stitching, scuffing, loss of leather along the edges, worn corners. NEW EDITION, revised and expanded by Vaultier, of this famous dictionary first published in 1674 as a single folio volume. It has been continually expanded and corrected, and remains a reference work to this day. Allegorical FRONTISPICE engraved by Thomassin after Desmarets; PORTRAIT of the author engraved after de Troy; numerous initial letters and headbands engraved on steel. A GOOD COPY in a uniform binding of the period, showing signs of wear but with the book block in GOOD CONDITION. ¶ Brunet, III, 1901.
