LOBI, Burkina Faso. Hardwood, patina from wear and tear. This Bateba statue, known as ‘Bêtise’, depicts a man and a woman standing in a copulatory position. This statue, intended for religious use, was commissioned at the request of a Thil (nature spirit) and carved by a diviner-sculptor. First half of the 20th century. Height: 37.5 cm (excluding the plinth).
