Tourism - Roger Broders (1883-1953) - Marseille, starting point for the Côte d'Azur. Circa 1929. Printer Serre, Paris. 99,5x63cm. Original poster, lithograph, canvas-backed. Condition A, very slight trace of fold in the upper left corner. References: Affiches Art Deco p. 21, Broders p. 82, Perry / Broders p. 36, Reclame 82, Voyage p. 38, Weill 329, Affiches Chemins de Fer 151, Marseille p. 57, Golden Age 137, Train 241, Le Train p. 78. This composition by one of the masters of the Art Deco poster is perfect in several ways: The L-shaped composition is pushed to the extreme limits of the exercise, the simplification of the characters on board the convertible coach marked: Route des Alpes et du Littoral is virtuoso, and finally the very avant-garde typography is brilliantly integrated into the image to the point of blending in with the elements of the landscape. A rare poster in this state of preservation, with exceptionally fresh colours. The town of Bouches du Rhône was indeed a transport hub, both for the train and the car, which was then beginning to appear, encouraged by tourism.
