Plombières-les-Bains, nicknamed the "City of a Thousand Balconies", was a very fashionable spa town at various times, particularly in the 19th century under Louis-Philippe I and Emperor Napoleon III. The Romans founded the town over 2,000 years ago for its healing hot springs. Over the centuries, illustrious spa-goers have followed in their footsteps: Montaigne, Mesdames Adélaïde and Victoire, daughters of Louis XV of France, Voltaire, Beaumarchais (the premiere of his famous 'Marriage of Figaro' took place in Plombières, where he owned the paper mill between 1780 and 1788). This Lorraine resort is still very popular today.
