Tourism - Jean Desaleux (1926-1990) - Messageries Maritimes, Pasteur. Circa 1960. 99x64 cm. Original poster, lithograph, canvas. Printed by Brugière. Condition A- minor restorations in the margins. This colourful, modernist poster promotes the Pasteur liner, the flagship of French cruises in the 1960s. In the foreground, a stylized family in vivid solid colours embodies the boom in family and popular maritime tourism. Built in 1938 by Chantiers de l'Atlantique, the Pasteur was first used as a transatlantic liner, then as a troop transport during the Second World War before being converted to cruise ships. The poster, by Jean Desaleux, illustrates the graphic aesthetic of the 1960s, with its geometric shapes, solid colours and dynamic composition, reflecting the post-war revival of maritime communication.
