Description
Tourism - Charles Hallé (1867-1924) - State Railways, Excursions in Normandy. Circa 1925. Printer Hachard, Paris. 104.5x75.5cm. Original poster, lithograph, canvas-backed. Condition A. "Mortain - L'aiguille, entrée de la petite cascade (Manche)". The artist added this below his signature because he probably drew on the spot. It is still a popular tourist destination. Legend has it that a pond once occupied the valley floor. It was here that the local nymphs took their baths away from prying eyes. Anyone who had the audacity to sneak up on them would have been condemned to death. One day, however, Leonix, a young and attractive warrior, managed to get close to them. As soon as the Cance nymph was overcome with rage, she rushed towards him and in one swift movement struck him violently with the spindle she held in her hand. Leonix collapsed, the earth split open to swallow his body and the nymph's spindle, which had remained stuck in the chest of the valiant warrior, was transformed into the stone we see today, known as the Aiguille or Fuseau.
