Description
Tourism - Charles Hallo dit Alo (1882-1969) - Chemin de Fer Paris Orléans. Morgat, Finistère, Automobile service from Quimper. Circa 1925. Printer Lucien serre, Paris. 103.5x73.5cm. Original poster, lithograph, canvas covered. Condition A-, lower margin restored. The sardine boats, the ocean and the Finistère coastline are depicted in colours reminiscent of Orientalist paintings and Japanese prints reinvented by Henri Rivière. Armand Peugeot commissioned Abel Chabal, an architect from Brittany, to build this new seaside resort. Two hotels and numerous villas were the fruit of the fruitful collaboration between the two men: the Hôtel de Morgat built in 1884 and the Grand Hôtel de la mer opened in 1908. Armand Peugeot personally supervised the development of "his" seaside resort and it is said that, far from seeking to folklorise the whole, which was common at the time, the style of some of the buildings is reminiscent of the industrialist's Franc-Comtois roots.
