Description
Tourism - René Péan (1875-1955) - Excursions to the Ocean Islands, Île de Ré, Donkey in knickers. Circa 1910. Printer Chaix, Paris. 104x75cm. Original poster, lithograph, canvas-backed. Condition A.
The scene is St Clément des Baleines in Charente Maritime, at the foot of the lighthouses. On the Île de Ré, donkeys, more precisely Poitou donkeys, were used in the salt works and vineyards. These places were often invaded by insects such as flies, ticks and mosquitoes, causing unpleasant bites for both the marsh workers and the animals. These bites could lead to inflammation and severe illness, sometimes resulting in the death of the animals. In addition, the fields were overgrown with tall grass that could cause injuries to the donkeys' legs. According to tradition, it was a woman from Ars en Ré around 1860 who had the ingenious idea of creating some sort of trousers using an old shirt worn by her husband. It has since become a tourist attraction.
