Description
Tourism - Jeanne Thil (1887-1968) - Compagnie Générale Transsaharienne. Circa 1930. Printer Serre & Cie, Paris. 99.5x65cm. Original poster, lithograph, canvas covered. Condition A.
This mythical poster promotes a Renault bus that crossed the Horn of Africa, from Colomb-Béchar in Algeria to Fort-Lamy in Chad via Niamey in Niger. It also promoted hunting on the Niger, shown on the map alongside elephants, giraffes and rhinoceroses.
The company was set up in 1923 by Gaston Gradis, chairman of Nieuport-Astra, with the support of Renault, with the aim of establishing a direct, regular link between North Africa and French West Africa, first by car, then by plane, for the transport of passengers and goods. The first reconnaissance flights, the Gradis missions, began in 1923. In November and December 1923, Georges Estienne flew from Figuig in Morocco via Adrar to Tessalit in Mali. The following January, Gradis set off from Colomb-Béchar and reached Tessalit, then Bourem, Gao and finally Ansongo. From 1926, the company operated a twice-weekly service between Colomb-Béchar, Reggane and Gao. It should be remembered that the Croisière Noire, with Citroën, took place at the same time, in 1924.
