Description
Artist - Grégoire Mathias (1967-) - United Nations Day, 24 October 2020. WFUNA. Eiréné series. 2020. 100x70cm / 39,4x27,5in. Original poster. Four-colour process on 250g deluxe paper. Signed in the plate, not canvas-backed. This poster was produced for the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) to mark the 75th United Nations Day in Geneva on 24 October 2020. Grégoire MATHIAS, the contemporary artist to whom the poster was commissioned, trained at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and now exhibits in Europe and the United States. Following in the footsteps of Picasso, Miro and Chagall, who produced posters and lithographs for the WFUNA, he has renewed the genre with a dove of peace composed of an accumulation of flags from Member States. This combination of flags, conveying a message of strength in unity, is a classic that has been used repeatedly since the Second World War by the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the European Union and the promoters of the Marshall Plan. Many of these posters are now regarded as historic, yet timeless, both visually and symbolically. These include "United" by Leslie Ragan (1943), and "Together" by I. Spreekmeester (1950). The poster for United Nations Day 2020 follows in this footsteps, conveying the message that 75 years after its creation, the United Nations has 193 member states. Its strength comes from its cohesion around a common peace. This is reflected in the intermingled flags positioned at random, forming a symbol: the dove of peace. It moves against a black background evoking a sometimes hostile environment, and therefore that peace remains fragile.
A copy of this model is on display at the WFUNA General Secretariat at the UN in Geneva and in New York.
