Lot no. 217
Tourism - Anonymous (XX) - Jeder Volkspolizist, Ein Sportler. Circa 1950 Printed by Schütze. 84x60cm. Original poster, lithograph, canvas-backed. Condition A-, marginal tears, text slightly soiled. The text reads: The policeman of all peoples, an athlete! This very rare poster shows the importance of the police in East Germany. The People's Police existed from 1945 to 1990, i.e. from the end of the Second World War in the Soviet-occupied zone. You can see its badge. It fulfilled the role of community policing and maintaining order, while working closely with the Stasi. It is interesting to note an aesthetic similarity between these posters and those of Communist propaganda in Vietnam. The sporting nature of our subject is perhaps an echo of the SG Volkspolizei Potsdam club (1948-1952), whose football section included a well-known player, Günter Schröter.
