Asia, Africa, the Middle East and America symbolised here for the 1931 International Colonial Exhibition, which took place at the Porte Dorée and on the site of the Bois de Vincennes, to showcase the products and achievements of the French colonies. The pavilions were designed to showcase the products and achievements of the French colonies, as well as those of the other colonial powers taking part, with pavilions reflecting the architecture of the territories concerned, in particular those of Black Africa, Madagascar, North Africa, Indochina, Syria and Lebanon. Eight million visitors flocked to the site to "circumnavigate the world in a day", as promised at the time.
