Description
Show - Michel Gyarmathy (1881-1973) - Josephine Baker, Folies Bergère. 1949. Printed by Bedos, Paris. 148,5x95,5cm. Original poster, lithograph, canvas-backed. Condition A-, traces of original folds, traces of two small tears. The author of this poster is also the director of the show. Michel Gyarmathy, artistic director of the Folies Bergère, created this extraordinary and unique work of art from a Harcourt photograph. As the great expert Jack Rennert points out, this classic poster heralds Joséphine's legendary return to the Folies Bergère (in the Revue Féeries et Folies ) after the end of the Second World War. In the acclaimed biography "Joséphine: Le cœur affamé", authors Jean-Claude Baker and Chris Chase wrote of this period: "Joséphine wanted to offer Paris a new Folies-Bergère; there would still be naked girls, but Joséphine, the war heroine, would cover her body in thirty different costumes and embody many of history's famous women. She would be Eve, then Empress Josephine, and finally the unfortunate Marie, Queen of Scots" (p. 285).
