Description
Tourism - Emmanuel Paul Champseix (1890-1983) - Artouste cable car, 1150m., 1950m. 1937. 99,5x62,5cm. Printed by Serre, Paris. Original poster, lithograph, canvas covered. Condition A. This poster shows a spectacular view of the Pic du Midi d'Ossau, evoking a tourist attraction at this ski resort in Béarn. In 1932, with the aim of stimulating tourism, the department's General Council proposed to the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi (CCM) that it exploit the panorama of the upper Ossau valley for tourist purposes. The request was sent to the Pyrénées-Atlantiques prefecture, which granted permission to open the site to the public. The convoy consisted of two or three wagons with wooden benches, pulled by Renault locomotives. It ran only on Sundays during the summer season. The company delegated its operation to retired train drivers. The poster won the Challenge Cup and the Gold Medal at the International Tourist Poster Competition, Krakow 1935.
