Description
Tourism - Ulpiano Checa y Sanz (1860-1916) - Orleans and Midi Railway. Bagnères de Bigorre, Labassère sulphur spring. Circa 1897. 108x74.5cm. Printer Dupont, Paris. Original poster, lithograph, canvas covered. Condition A. The lower part of the poster shows elegant couples of tourists at the water's edge, while a Bagnèra woman in traditional costume, in the guise of the writer Philadelphe de Gerde, contemplates the Lac Bleu de Beaucens. It was the priest Jacques Pédefer who unearthed the spring in 1800, enabling the town in the Hautes Pyrénées to become a spa resort. In recognition of this, the town council had his bust sculpted and displayed in the town hall square.
